Simply Static has more than 30,000 active installs and is actively developed, so it is a sensible default. People look for alternatives for a few specific reasons: its free version only exports a ZIP file or a local folder, its Pro plan renews every year, its own FAQ says it is not a good fit for WooCommerce, or they want a different deploy target. Here is how the alternatives compare.

1. Pinery Static — for Cloudflare Pages
Built only for Cloudflare Pages. The free plan exports and deploys the whole site directly to Pages — through the Cloudflare API, in pure PHP, uploading only changed files — so there is no ZIP to upload by hand. Pro ($299 once per site) keeps comments, search, contact forms and WooCommerce prices, stock and add-to-cart working, deploys automatically on publish, and includes a Worker router to keep your domain with one-click rollback. The trade-off: it deploys nowhere else. Full comparison with Simply Static →
2. Staatic — free deploys to many targets
Staatic’s free Community edition can generate and deploy a static site to Amazon S3 or S3-compatible storage, GitHub, Netlify or SFTP, or save a ZIP archive. Its Premium plans — Starter at €90 and Professional at €140 per site per year, with a 14-day trial — add forms and search integration, scheduled and change-based publishing, and Staatic Cloud hosting. It has about 2,000 active installs and was last updated in September 2026. Cloudflare Pages is not a listed target, though you can reach it through GitHub.
3. WP2Static — open source, uncertain future
The long-standing open-source option. It is free and modular, with deployment add-ons for different targets. Its ownership passed to Strattic in 2021 and then to Elementor, and independent sources now describe it as unmaintained, so check its GitHub activity before you depend on it. WP2Static compared →
4. Export WP Page to Static HTML — for single pages
Best when you need a few pages rather than a whole site — a landing page, an archive copy, a hand-off to a client. The free version exports up to five selected items per run to a ZIP file or over FTP/SFTP; full-site export and AWS S3 upload are Pro features. About 4,000 active installs.
5. Managed services — Shifter and Simply Static Studio
If you would rather not run WordPress at all, a managed service hosts WordPress and publishes the static copy for you. Simply Static Studio costs $12 a month per site; Shifter’s static plans start at $40 a month. Strattic, once the best-known option, closed its static hosting on January 1, 2025. Frequently asked questions
What is the best free alternative to Simply Static?
It depends on where you deploy. For Cloudflare Pages, Pinery Static’s free plan deploys directly with no page limit. For S3, GitHub or Netlify, Staatic’s free edition deploys there directly.
Which static plugin deploys to Cloudflare Pages for free?
Pinery Static’s free plan deploys straight to Cloudflare Pages. Simply Static includes Cloudflare Pages only in Pro; other tools reach it indirectly, for example through GitHub.
Which alternative works with WooCommerce?
Pinery Static Pro keeps WooCommerce prices, stock and add-to-cart live on static pages, with cart and checkout served by WordPress. Simply Static says stores are not a good fit for static.
